The Irises is a well-known painting by the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, one of the first paintings he made when he was admitted to the hospital St.-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in France, in 1889 .
The canvas was painted shortly before Van Gogh's first admission to the psychiatric institution of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. In his correspondence he called the work "the lightning rod for my illness". There is a great tension and impatience in the effect. In terms of style, the influence of Japanese printmaking can be observed, as in many of his works.
The first owner was French art critic and anarchist Octave Mirbeau, who was one of the first admirers of Vincent van Gogh.

It is now owned by the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
