The Girl with Pearl Earring is one of the most famous paintings in the world. Two years ago, an international team of scientists examined the masterpiece. Now, two years later, the results are finally known.
Discoveries
With microscopic research they discovered that the background of the Girl is not just an empty space: Vermeer painted her in front of a green curtain. The curtain disappeared in the course of time due to the decolourisation of the green paint.
Apart from that, it also seemed as if the Girl had no eyelashes, but the research shows that Vermeer had painted small hairs around both eyes. These discoveries make the Girl more personal than thought, but the question of who exactly the Girl was remains a mystery. For more information about the research, such as Johannes Vermeer's painting process and the palette of colours the painter used for this masterpiece, please visit the Mauritshuis website.
