Piet Mondriaan (1872 – 1944) is primarily known as a pioneer of abstract art, though he only began experimenting with this style after moving to Paris around the age of forty. Prior to that, he mostly painted realistic scenes where nature played a prominent role. The "Red Amaryllis with Blue Background" belongs to a private collection. Mondriaan regularly painted flowers, such as chrysanthemums or amaryllises, often as a single flower placed at the center of the composition. While it is commonly believed that Mondriaan painted these flowers due to commercial demand, the exceptional quality of these works likely also reflects the joy he found in creating them.
