Greek mythology tells of Danaid and her forty-nine sisters who were married to the fifty sons of Aegyptus. Their father Danaus, who has a conflict with Aegyptus, orders his daughters to murder their husbands on their wedding night. As a punishment for their serious crime, they are sentenced to the underworld, where they have to fill barrels with water forever, but never fill up. Rodin saw in this story an opportunity to visualize total exhaustion of the female body. The marble accentuates the flowing lines and reflects the aesthetics of Art Nouveau.
